Nourishing My Path Into Self-Care

Secret Garden by Alma Art
How does your secret garden grow? Do you dig deep down to your roots to ensure they are being nourished? Do you reach out for help when you need it? How are you feeding your inner world? Do you have a community that nourishes you? Do you make time for gratitude?

As I reflect on my journey into radiant self-care, supported by a group of students on a similar journey, I find myself sitting in the southeast corner of my garden, shaded by a nearby red oak. It is mid-day, 82 degrees and I am drinking the second shake of the day on the second day of my 21-day cleanse.

Yesterday morning I began the cleanse in gratitude by sitting in Birdsong garden, thanking the nature spirits for their guidance and support with its creation and maintenance; thanking nature for its many gifts and lessons of energy, seed and soil.

What are these gifts and lessons? They are elemental. New to gardening, I am learning the importance of how a good soil, balanced with nutrients provides a foundation of growth. Seed, pure and natural, untainted by chemicals and pesticides, planted with love and attention provides a nutritious crop. I notice when the plants are thirsty and how they prefer rainwater from our collection tank to water from the faucet. Sometimes I sit among the garden plants and simply breathe in the freshness of air, be it cold or hot, moist or dry, windy or still. I enjoy the fire light of the sun, a blanket of clouds and foggy misty mornings. On occasion you will find me in the garden soaking in the light of the stars and the moon. I notice how some plants survive the cold and stormy weather better than others and provide shelter when needed. I look for nutritious ways to feed these plants, knowing what I feed them will feed me.

I seek the nourishing and sacred energy of nature to infuse this journey of cleansing toxins, not only from this physical body but also from mind, emotion, and spirit. I seek a cleansing of relationship with self and others, old and new. I seek the continued support of the circles of community I belong to and I open to the possibility of new ways of being and the discovery of new roots. I open to the lessons of the trees who are teaching me the importance of humility, compassion and support. I open to the teaching by example of the members of the Earthtribe who demonstrate these qualities in their actions. And I open to absorbing the teachings of the garden.

I am nourished by this garden process and the lessons of nature, by supportive Earthtribe ceremonial gatherings, and this shared path into self care. Ho Ma-doh!

Along the Journey

Along the Journey by Raina Gentry

"Along the journey" into radiant self-care I find myself making changes in my cellular being; deep and gentle vibrations alter my sense of self and surroundings. Something is changing how I feel, think, taste, see, hear and wonder. There is a vibrancy in the air awakening the cells of my body, mind and soul to a new dance.

Remember by Raina Gentry

In meditation I converse with my four-year-old self to deepen our relationship and better understand the underlying energies of my childhood where my eating and self-care patterns developed. I look at my life through the lens of my child self and she through mine. We hold each other through tears of truth. The ingredients of this emotional soup feeds our awareness, creating an intimacy of knowing, it is time for a new recipe.

Orchard by Raina Gentry
Joining 4000 plus participants in a worldwide moon circle,  we breathe together in the presence of the full moon spirit, our hands and hearts touching across the miles, like stones in the soil of Mother Earth gathering in beauty, truth and goodness. It is a healing experience.

The groundwork is laid with deep meditations, night time sojourns, cleansing fires, sweat lodges, vision quests, and supportive circles of community nourishing the path with stepping stones to wholeness and health.

With depth of intention set, I actively step forward, buy a good blender, make green smoothies for breakfast, eat more organic foods, diminish caffeine intake, and aim toward ph balance with alkaline foods and water. I continue yoga three times a week and walk on the weekends. A three-week cleanse is next.

A Radiant Offering

Singing by Rita Loyd

I made a spiral offering of corn meal upon the Earth to welcome Spring
Nourishing it with songs of gratitude and prayers of hope and love

I called to the promise of Thunder Beings
Come...disturb us...comfort us...quench this thirsty land

I awoke at midnight to a thunderous light show
Reminding me of the taste, sound and incredible smell of rain

I dreamed of traveling to places unknown
Supported and guided by messages of ancestral beings

I danced upon the Earth this morning in delight
To the tune of song birds and the sight of a rain soaked spiral

Yesterday I was overwhelmed by the challenges of a Spring Cleanse
Today I am encouraged to open to this possibility

A Radiant Healing Circle

Our energy flows where our attention goes.

As I continue my journey into Wisdom University's virtual course on Radiant Self-Care, I find myself giving attention to where my attention goes, and simply observing the energy flow. I was reminded of this bit of wisdom when I heard Dr. Bobbi Spurr say it a few times in our virtual calls. I find it is worth hearing again and again.

If you've read any of my blog posts, you know following the flow of energy is not knew to me, but it helps to be reminded, and to look at it with fresh eyes from a current viewpoint. In my first post, How to Nourish the Birth of a BlogI seek "a dopamine rush to feed my writing." I am awakened "to the pulse of a new day" in a poem entitled The Energy of Gratitude. I speak of "becoming intimate with the earth" in Creating a Sacred Practice. And I discover "a doorway to connection" in The Healing Point of Nature.

What does that healing point look like? How do we get there from here? I believe the answer lies in the stillness and vibration of connection, tapping into the reciprocal energy flow between points of contact. How and where we focus our attention and how we feed it impacts this process.
Recently, I joined a healing circle with a focus on a dear sweet woman named Diane, who happens to be a Wisdom University student. That is how I met her. Diane is on quite a journey in her relationship with her body. She has cancer of the tongue. A large circle of people (more than 90 to my knowledge) around the globe have formed an electronic healing circle. With updates from her sister, we follow Diane's journey through surgery and into recovery. Our messages of support are relayed to her each day.

I am moved by the merging and weaving of the healing thoughts and prayers of so many people sharing a focal point. Like a quiver of arrows, dipped in hearts of red, blessed by laughter and tears, sprinkled with sunshine and rain, wrapped in love and light, the attention of the many flows directly to her, penetrating the space that she breathes.

In my experience, healing circles nourish more than the recipient. The feathers of the arrow reach out to all who participate, tickling our senses and opening our hearts. I am blessed by Diane's journey, her incredible attitude and her circle of supporters.

A Recipe for Radiant Self-Care

Heart of Healing by Rita Loyd

What does Radiant Self-Care look like? How can we attain such a state of being? What ingredients would you use to create it for your self? Today I begin a 6-month virtual course with Wisdom University to do just that. I invite you along for the journey through a series of blog posts. For a more in-depth look join the monthly calls through Wisdom University. Lets begin with an inquiry.

What are my aspirations regarding my self-care? I aspire to deepen and empower my relationship with my body, emotions, mind and spirit. My ideal healthy body is strong and flexible, free from inflammation, free from annual occurrences of bronchitis, free from arthritic pain, with a healthy digestive system, clear vision and steady heart. I desire the ability to more easily still my monkey mind, greater sustainability in being present in the moment, to more easily focus in on what is important, to be less resistant and less compulsive, to let go of what I am not and what I no longer need. I want a more stable energy level and to continue to improve my emotional stability. I desire a more resilient memory and the ability to write more efficiently. I aim for more consistency in my spiritual practice. I want to be more confident in meeting the needs of my body and I want my body to be more responsive to my needs.

Does this sound like a tall order? I believe being honest with my self is a good place to start this loving process of self-care. How would you start?

Breath Life Force by Rita Loyd

What supports me most to connect with self? A consistent and flexible spiritual practice supports me most in connecting with self. One guideline I use is to be physically outside, exposed to Nature. I feel closer to Sacred Mystery, the Divine, and the Breath of Life when I am in Nature. I seek ways to connect to Source by what I call the recipe, utilizing breath, motion and gratitude in my practice, a gift from an Indigenous Grandmother who visits me in dreamtime. Other ingredients I find helpful are the use of vibration (blowing a conch shell, drumming, chanting, chime of finger cymbals or simply making animal sounds); being flexible in using whatever meditative technique arises in the moment versus a standard meditation; and honoring the directions of  the Medicine Wheel.

Celebration 2 by Rita Loyd

In an introductory call for this course with Dr. Bobbi Spurr, I learned another nutritious recipe, utilizing a mantra focused on the breath: Inhale presence HERE (Hearts Experience Resonates Ease), Pause with LOVE (Loving Opens Value Everywhere), and Exhale opposition NOW (Non-Opposition Wins). Learning new tools like this enhances my spiritual practice and enlivens my life.

As I explore what Radiant Self-Care means to me, I hope you will join me with comments, questions, or in your own silent inquiry. Bring an open heart, the breath of opportunity, and focused attention to your own self-care.
